The University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) provides students the opportunity to learn and develop skills for a career as a Software Engineer. The Computer Science and Software Engineering Department offers courses and degree programs, such as a Bachelor of Science in Computer engineering and software engineering that allows students to gain knowledge in computing and problem-solving, with an emphasis on software engineering principles and practices.

At UNK, students gain a comprehensive understanding of programming, algorithms and data structures and analysis, software development and project management, design and architecture, system implementation, databases and information systems, computer networks, security and ethical issues, and software testing and verification. They pursue knowledge in emerging technologies, and study areas that could lead to graduate studies.

The UNK Software Engineering Program provides opportunities to apply knowledge and develop research and teamwork skills through a variety of activities, including co-op experience, internships and independent research projects. Students gain practical experience by working on customized software engineering projects through the Software Engineering Practicum Course, providing hands-on experience with the latest software technologies and development tools.

Through the use of modern laboratories with the latest workstations and software, students are able to obtain necessary competencies for a successful career as a software engineer. Additionally, the unversity offers a variety of resources to help students find job opportunities, such as the Career Services Office, which provides internships and jobs related to software engineering.
